Eswatini infrastructure and environmental development

Overview

Eswatini is advancing several development initiatives focused on rural connectivity and environmental sustainability. In October 2026, the government and Engineers in Action (EIA) inaugurated the Nkosinatsi Suspension Footbridge in Siphofaneni. This 87-metre structure, the first in the partnership to utilize a steel walking deck, marks the 44th bridge completed through the collaboration since 2017. Plans for 2027 include the construction of nine more pedestrian bridges, three clean-water systems, and five school boreholes to improve access to essential services in rural areas.

Simultaneously, Eswatini has joined a Southern African Development Community (SADC) regional initiative to establish a circular electronics economy. Implemented under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) through the Global Electronics Management (GEM) program, the project involves several neighboring nations. The initiative focuses on the repair, refurbishment, and safe recycling of electronic waste to recover valuable materials and protect public health by strengthening regulatory frameworks and producer responsibility mechanisms.
