Overview
The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has declared a state of “full-blown war” against the Ethiopian federal government, marking a collapse of the 2022 peace agreement. Following reports of increased attacks by federal forces and drone strikes, Tigrayan forces seized three airports and launched attacks into the Afar and Amhara regions.
As the conflict escalated, the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) reportedly utilized heavy artillery and airstrikes. Reports indicate that airstrikes hit five schools in Tigray on September 22, and an artillery strike in Kobo, Amhara, caused civilian fatalities. In response to the violence, Ethiopian Airlines suspended all flights to the Tigray region.
United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker Türk expressed deep concern over the hostilities, urging all parties to de-escalate to prevent a full-scale war. The UN has called for the protection of civilians and the guarantee of safe, unhindered access for humanitarian aid to prevent a large-scale humanitarian crisis.
