In October 2026, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed 62 state ministers across 22 ministries to form the Medemer Government. These appointments included individuals from outside the ruling Prosperity Party, such as Eyob Mesafint of the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice. Following these appointments, the Prime Minister directed cabinet ministers and senior officials to undergo military training at the Hurso military training centre. The Prime Minister personally participated in the initiative, which includes high-ranking figures such as the Speaker of the House of Federation and Federation, Muferiat Kamil, the Finance Minister, Fitsum Assefa, and the Health Minister, Mekdes Daba. Abiy stated that the training aims to foster instill military-style discipline, patriotism, accountability, teamwork, and leadership. leadership within the civilian government. He argued that achieving Ethiopia’s goal of universal prosperity requires a leadership class that is physically fit, morally resilient, and intellectually capable, noting that while soldiers have targets and civilians have goals, the ultimate objective for both is victory. This move comes as the nation manages security challenges in the Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia regions, alongside tensions with Eritrea.
