Overview

Eastern European nations, led by Romania and Slovakia, have advocated for reducing the legal protection status of brown bears to align conservation levels with those of wolves. Following a period of legislative review and a challenge to the law’s constitutionality, the Romanian Senate re-passed a law authorizing the hunting of 859 brown bears for the years 2026 and 2027. This represents an increase from the previous limit of 426. The new regulations also double the number of permitted emergency hunts from 55 to 110. While environmental organizations continue to criticize the measures, proponents argue the regulation is necessary to protect human life and agricultural activities.
