EU Digital Product Passport implementation

The European Union is preparing for the implementation of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). This regulatory framework aims to provide standardized information on product sustainability, material composition, and repairability, with the first major deadline for large-scale batteries set for February 2027.

As the deadline approaches, significant challenges regarding data management and corporate readiness have emerged. In Italy, while national standards for data exchange and interoperability have been adopted, manufacturers struggle with fragmented information that is often spread across multiple disconnected archives.

In France, consumer sentiment indicates a high demand for transparency, with 64% of consumers seeking more information on product origins. However, a gap exists between consumer expectations and industry preparedness; while most companies view traceability as essential, 90% report they do not know how to implement the DPP. Current tracking methods remain largely fragmented, complicating the transition to the new mandatory requirements.
