The European Commission is rolling out the Digital Product Passport (DPP) initiative under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) to enhance transparency regarding product composition, circularity, and environmental impact. Following the 24 July 2026 opening of the EU Product Digital Passport Registry, industry activity has intensified. In Germany, Echo PRM GmbH and Quanos Solutions GmbH have partnered to provide an EU-compliant service using QR codes and NFC technology to integrate scattered legacy IT data. Additionally, the GEMÜ Group, alongside IHK Heilbronn-Franken and VDMA, conducted workshops demonstrating practical data-exchange use cases, such as bioreactor models, to prepare companies for industrial data spaces. To support uniform execution and standardized procedures, European standardization organizations CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI have published several new standards in the Official Journal of the European Union. These include DIN EN 18216 for secure data exchange protocols, DIN EN 18219 for unique identifiers for products and operators, DIN EN 18220 for data carrier requirements, and DIN EN 18221 for decentralized data storage, archiving, and persistence. The implementation follows a staged approach. A significant milestone is set for 29 November 2026, when the EU will implement new digital identification systems for vehicles via the Environmental Vehicle Passport (EVP) under Euro 7 regulations. This includes mandatory registration for all new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles by 29 November 2027.
