EU-Italy migration policy and border control coordination
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has advocated for a unified European Union strategy regarding immigration and returns. During discussions in Marina di Pietrasanta, Tajani called for the activation of the EU migration and asylum pact, the implementation of repatriation mechanisms, and the establishment of new processing centers in African nations like Albania. Following these calls for EU-wide action, Regarding bilateral relations, Tajani addressed migration flows in relation to Germany. He indicated that he does not perceive a problem with Germany concerning secondary migration flows, suggesting a balance will be reached despite the presence of German-flagged NGO vessels docking in Italy. This follows statements from the German Interior Ministry reiterating that asylum seekers will be returned to Italy, primarily concerning cases from the preceding two months under the new Migration and Asylum Pact. More recently, Tajani defended the decision to extend internal border controls within the Schengen Area, citing the necessity to combat irregular immigration and prevent terrorism. He emphasized that the jihadist threat must not be underestimated and stated that the extension followed a review by the Immigration and Border Security Analysis Committee. Tajani dismissed claims that these measures were driven by electoral motives or political rivalry with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, noting that recent controls have already resulted in six arrests and 31 deportations at maritime and airport borders.
