EU-Philippines free trade agreement

Overview

The European Union and the Philippines have reached a political agreement on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) intended to strengthen economic ties and expand the EU’s trade reach in the Indo-Pacific region.

The deal is expected to eliminate 94 percent of Philippine tariffs and cover more than 97 percent of current bilateral trade. Key provisions include opening the Philippine government procurement market to foreign bidders, protecting intellectual property, and making commitments to the Paris Agreement, human rights, and sustainable development.

For the EU, the pact provides improved access for agricultural exports such as pork, poultry, dairy, and spirits, while securing access to critical raw materials like nickel and cobalt. European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic described the agreement as a ‘decisive step and a victory for both parties.’

Negotiations for the agreement originally began in 2015 and were resumed in March 2024. Formal signing of the agreement is anticipated to occur in 2027.
