The European Commission has approved state aid packages for France France, Spain, and Spain Slovenia to mitigate economic pressures caused by the crisis in the Middle East, which has driven up fuel and energy costs. In France, the Commission approved €40.5 million in aid for the transport, agriculture, fishing, and aquaculture sectors. This support is provided through state-guaranteed soft loans with a fixed interest rate of 3.8%, allowing businesses to borrow between €5,000 and €50,000 for up to three years. In Spain, the Commission authorized €52 million in aid specifically for the agricultural sector to compensate for rising diesel costs. The Commission characterized the Spanish measure as “necessary, adequate and proportionate” to support farm activity, noting that the Middle East crisis has impacted irrigation and transport costs. While the regime is validated, the Spanish administration has yet to determine specific distribution criteria, payment schedules, or exact amounts per farm. Slovenia has also received approval for a €500,000 government aid plan to support companies in the agriculture, fisheries, and marine aquaculture sectors. This assistance, provided through direct grants, is scheduled to run until March 31, 2027. The grants will cover up to 70% of additional costs resulting from market developments directly affected by the Middle East crisis. The Commission concluded the plan is “necessary, appropriate, and proportionate” under the Temporary Framework for State Aid.
