EU subsidy dispute involving Agrofert and Andrej Babiš

The European Commission has suspended tens of millions in EU subsidy payments to the Agrofert holding group, specifically targeting payments under the Common Agricultural Policy. The Commission cites an ongoing conflict of interest involving Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.

EU Budget Commissioner Piotr Serafin indicated that the RSVP Trust, established to manage Babiš’s assets, is insufficient to resolve the issue. The Commission noted that because Babiš remains familiar with the fund’s portfolio and the potential beneficiaries are his descendants, the measures do not adequately eliminate his personal interest.

Andrej Babiš has denied the allegations, asserting that his use of a trust fund effectively severed his ties to the conglomerate and that he derives no profit from Agrofert. While the Czech State Agricultural Intervention Fund (SZIF) has continued to process certain supports while conducting a legal analysis of the decision, the dispute has drawn criticism from opposition figures regarding the country’s international credibility. Agrofert maintains it has complied with both Czech and European Union regulations.
