Major European airlines are phasing out their Airbus A340 fleets in favor of more efficient twin-engine aircraft. Swiss International Air Lines has begun retiring its Airbus A340-300 fleet, starting with the aircraft HB-JMB. The On October 14, the 23-year-old jet completed its final flight from Zurich to Twente Airport in the Netherlands for dismantling and recycling by Aircraft End-of-Life Solutions. Before decommissioning, technicians will remove specific components owned by Swiss. While some aircraft are destined for recycling, Swiss has donated another A340, HB-JMH, to the Swiss Transport Museum, which is currently seeking funding for its relocation. Swiss is replacing these four-engine models with Airbus A350-900s. Lufthansa has officially concluded its scheduled passenger operations for the Airbus A340-600 after 23 years of service. The retirement was marked by the arrival of flight LH419, operated by aircraft D-AIHW, which traveled from Washington Dulles International Airport to Frankfurt Airport on October 19. This final flight carried 267 passengers and 15 crew members. Since first receiving the type in November 2003, Lufthansa has operated 24 such aircraft, transporting over 40 million passengers. Although the A340-600 was once the world’s longest commercial passenger aircraft, its four-engine configuration led to higher fuel consumption compared to modern competitors. The phase-out is part of a modernization strategy to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, with the airline aiming for 70% of its long-haul fleet to consist of new-generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner, by 2028.
