European anti-nuclear remembrance protests

In early August 2026, the 81st anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings sparked a series of public events across Europe. In Linz, Austria, activists staged a rally at a Google data‑centre, linking the energy consumption of large computing facilities to broader concerns about a renewed nuclear arms race and urging democratic oversight of such infrastructure. The same day, German demonstrators called for the country to join the United Nations nuclear‑weapon‑ban treaty and to end its participation in NATO nuclear sharing, citing modernisation of nuclear arsenals and high global spending on nuclear weapons.

A week later, the German town of Nottuln held a candle‑lighting ceremony at its town hall. Mayor Dietmar Thönnes and the local peace initiative used the occasion to stress a vision of a world without nuclear weapons, reading a fictional letter to the victims and echoing calls from Mayors for Peace to withdraw U.S. nuclear weapons from Germany’s Büchel site and ratify the UN ban treaty.
