The National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in Athens has won the 2026 Art Museum Award from the European Museum Academy. The award ceremony was held in Alicante, Spain, on Saturday, September 26. EMST was selected from a shortlist that included of six prestigious institutions, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, FENIX Museum of Migration in Rotterdam, Hastings Contemporary, Contemporary in the United Kingdom, Museum Gugging, Gugging in Austria, and the National Gallery of Slovenia. While EMST secured the top prize, the Rijksmuseum was honored with the Outstanding Institution Award for its overall contribution. The jury praised the museum EMST for its boldness and vision, highlighting specifically noting its use of art as a ‘fundamental medium for human thought and evolution during turbulent times.’ The distinction recognizes museums that utilize art in innovative ways to address contemporary social issues, with the award criteria rooted in democratic and human values such as social justice, inclusion, gender equality, and sustainability. During the ceremony, EMST Director Katerina Grego and Administrative and Financial Director Athina Ioannou represented the institution. Grego expressed gratitude to Culture Minister Lina Mendoni for her support of the public museum. Additionally, Angeliki Giannakidou received an award for her contributions during the event.
