European authorization of Hopledo for Parkinson's disease

Overview

The European Commission and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have authorized Hopledo, a modified-release oral formulation of levodopa/carbidopa, for the treatment of adult patients with Parkinson’s disease.

The therapy is specifically indicated for patients experiencing moderate to severe motor fluctuations that are not adequately controlled by existing oral regimens. The drug utilizes a single hard capsule containing both immediate-release granules and prolonged-release pellets to provide rapid onset and stable plasma concentrations.

Zambon, the developer of the therapy, noted that motor fluctuations affect approximately 80% of Parkinson’s patients within ten years of diagnosis. A gradual rollout of Hopledo in European markets is expected to begin in October 2026.
