A series of studies conducted by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) and other European consumer organizations has evaluated automotive reliability and the economic impact of electric vehicles. Initial findings regarding general car reliability placed BYD among the most reliable brands with a score of 89 out of 100, tying with Tesla and outperforming several European manufacturers such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and BMW. The report attributed BYD’s performance to its vertical integration and control over component manufacturing. Subsequent analysis focusing specifically on 100% electric vehicles identified BMW and Smart as the leaders in reliability, both scoring 91 out of 100. Tesla and BYD followed with scores of 89. While electric vehicles demonstrated significantly lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to combustion engine vehicles, the study noted that insurance premiums for electric models remain approximately 36% higher on average. A detailed OCU study surveying 3,810 drivers across ten European countries reinforced these rankings. While BMW and Smart led in mechanical reliability, Tesla was ranked as the brand with the highest driver satisfaction, followed by BMW and Polestar. Dacia also achieved a reliability score of 89, while Kia, Nissan, Renault, and MG scored 87. The economic data highlights that for a distance of 100,000 kilometers, an EV using home charging is estimated to cost approximately 2,700 euros in electricity, compared to roughly 12,000 euros for a gasoline vehicle. Annual maintenance for EVs is estimated at 140 euros, significantly lower than the 250 euros typical for combustion engines, though insurance premiums for electric vehicles can be up to 36% more expensive than traditional models.
