European bio-based material development and regulation

Overview

The European Commission has initiated a public consultation to evaluate whether bio-based feedstock can substitute for recycled content in plastic packaging. This review, part of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, may lead to new legislative measures by February 2028, such as sustainability requirements or targets for bio-based feedstock use.

In tandem with regulatory efforts, various European research projects are advancing the development of sustainable materials. The GREEN project is working to create biodegradable delivery systems for fertilizers to reduce microplastic pollution, while the SUPREME-PILOTS project is investing 6.8 million euros to improve the durability of plant-based plastics for industrial applications using reactive extrusion and artificial intelligence.
