Hungary continues to expand its transport and public space infrastructure through significant road, rail, and urban redevelopment projects. In June 2026, Transport Minister Dávid Vitézy announced a major shift in road policy, moving away from highway concessions toward direct investment in regional networks. This includes a 250-km renovation programme by Magyar Közút and a broader 2026 initiative to renovate 570 kilometres of main and secondary roads across 210 locations, valued at approximately 149 billion forints. A significant portion of this work is supported by the EU’s TOP Plusz programme. Urban and local projects are also advancing. In Budapest, plans were unveiled to dismantle construction barriers in Városliget to create green public space and make the park car-free. Additionally, Budapest Közút Zrt. launched a tender for the full reconstruction of the Óbuda K-bridge, scheduled for autumn 2026, which will widen the carriageway while preserving its historic appearance. Other local works include the renovation of Patak Street in Szentendre and the redevelopment of Budapest’s lower docklands. Regional roadworks remain frequent, with ongoing resurfacing and traffic management in Szentendre, Győr, Eger, disruptions have intensified. In Nagykanizsa, roadwork on Sugár utca, Rózsa utca, and Nagykanizsa. Balaton utca is causing significant disruptions, with police noting that the Huszti tér area is a critical section restricting downtown access. Major motorways are also experiencing heavy congestion; the M1 near Óbarok saw a 10-kilometer jam, and a technical failure near Bicske caused a 5-kilometer backup on the M7. Rail infrastructure also sees continued focus, including track work on the Gyékényes-Vízvár line and the ongoing implementation of the Baross Gábor Railway Development Plan. Meanwhile, Miskolc continues to utilize EU grants for tourism-related transport upgrades at Hámori-Lake.
