European cancer incidence disparities
Overview
Research presented at the ESMO Congress in Madrid, based on 2024 estimates from the European Cancer Information System, has identified significant regional disparities in cancer incidence across the European Union. The study indicates that a resident’s country of residence significantly impacts the risk of developing certain preventable cancers, specifically lung and cervical cancer.
In 2024, an estimated 29,412 excess cases were identified in EU countries with rates exceeding the community average. Specific disparities noted include lung cancer incidence in men ranging from 38 per 100,000 in Sweden to 130 in Hungary, and lung cancer rates among women in Denmark being more than four times higher than in Lithuania. Furthermore, the incidence of cervical cancer in Romania was found to be more than seven times higher than in Malta.
