European cardiovascular disease prevention initiatives
Overview
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death across Europe, accounting for approximately 1.6 to 1.7 million annual fatalities. In the European Union, these conditions represented 32.5% of all deaths in 2023, with mortality rates varying significantly by region. High rates were noted in Bulgaria and parts of Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, and Slovakia, while some French regions reported rates below 20%.
In Greece, cardiovascular issues accounted for roughly 31.9% of deaths in 2023, totaling over 40,000 fatalities and creating an annual economic burden exceeding 4.3 billion euros. Research indicates a gap in public readiness, noting that while many view the issue as serious, many citizens underestimate specific risks or are unaware of correct emergency procedures.
In response to these trends, the European Commission has launched the European Preventive Check-up Week and a new strategy focused on prevention and early diagnosis. This initiative emphasizes that nearly 80% of premature deaths could be prevented through lifestyle changes and managing risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. The Commission is encouraging member states to utilize national screening programs and new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to improve care. Additionally, in Greece, the ‘Apo Kardias’ (From the Heart) campaign has been introduced to promote prevention through intergenerational communication, a program scheduled to run until April 2027.
