European concerns over orbital computing and tech dependence

European officials and policy institutes have expressed growing concern regarding technological dependence on foreign powers, specifically concerning the United States and China.

Initial reports highlighted a significant fear among European business leaders regarding a potential U.S. ‘kill switch’ that could disrupt access to essential technologies. Concurrently, warnings emerged regarding a widening gap in orbital computing, as U.S. companies and Chinese state-backed initiatives rapidly develop space-based data centers while European efforts remain largely focused on research and small-scale demonstrations.

Subsequent analysis emphasized that China has designated space-based computing as a national strategic priority. Through entities like the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), China is implementing top-down strategies to align public and private industries in building orbital data centers. While Europe is pursuing digital sovereignty through projects such as the EU-funded ASCEND research and the European Space Agency’s work with Open Cosmos, experts warn that the scale of these efforts may be insufficient to prevent Europe from becoming dependent on third-party actors for processing vital space data.
