European electricity grids are experiencing significant strain due to extreme heat and low water levels, which have impacted nuclear generation and industrial supply. In Spain, the system operator Red Eléctrica has activated emergency demand response mechanisms multiple times to prevent blackouts, prioritizing residential service by cutting power to large industries. This has resulted in a 36% increase in system operation service costs compared to the previous year.

The European Commission has convened urgent meetings to address supply security in Central and Southeastern Europe. While the Electricity Coordination Group maintains that supply remains stable without immediate risk of saturation, the situation is expected to remain tense.

Broader challenges to net zero energy policies have emerged as nations manage the economic and logistical consequences of renewable energy reliance. In Spain, solar power investments have coincided with rising costs and previous supply shutdowns. Critics argue these policies contribute to scarcity and rationing, noting that the transition increases vulnerability during extreme weather events. Infrastructure limitations also persist, as the reliance on wind and solar requires significant grid expansion to accommodate worst-case weather scenarios.
