Environmental and sustainability initiatives in Croatia and the surrounding region continue to focus on waste reduction and ecological education. In Croatia, the ‘Papir nije smeće’ (Paper is not trash) campaign in Međimurje County concluded with an awards ceremony hosted by Unimer d. o. o. The initiative saw 6,074 children from 11 kindergartens and 20 primary schools collect over 170 tons of paper, with Osnovna škola Sveta Marija emerging as the top performer by collecting 12,960 kilograms. Additionally, in Sisak, students from the Hrastelnica branch school participated in cleaning and landscaping activities organized by local waste management companies and the City of Sisak to foster environmental responsibility. Efforts to combat specific types of waste have also expanded. In Zagreb, the theater KNAP hosted a workshop and the premiere of the eco-film ‘Bez bacanja, molim!’ (Please, Don't Throw It Away!) to educate families on preventing food waste, noting that Croatia generates approximately 482,000 tons of food waste annually. In Serbia, the association ‘Iz principa’ conducted a campaign at the Agriko market in Vršac, where activists and officials promoted the reduction of single-use plastics and the adoption of sustainable daily habits to improve urban cleanliness. Newer efforts in Croatia include the RCGO Piškornica project, which distributed 2,000 educational coloring books to kindergartens in Koprivnica-Križevci County. These materials aim to teach young children about proper waste management and environmental responsibility through play. Meanwhile, in Bulgaria, the ‘Educated Today, Successful Tomorrow’ project is working to support youth development and school enrollment through various regional partnerships.
