European forest fire health crisis

In late July 2026 French health officials warned that smoke from the continent’s expanding forest‑fire season was creating serious respiratory hazards, urging hydration, breathing techniques and antioxidant‑rich diets. The World Health Organization’s Europe office reported a 57 % rise in fires since 2022, noting more than 1,250 incidents between January and 22 July 2026 that burned over 250,000 ha and emitted 8.31 million tonnes of CO₂.

Spain and Portugal each saw fire counts double year‑on‑year, while France recorded a new record of 69,473 ha burned by early summer 2026 and deployed an A400M aircraft to drop retardant over the Gironde region. Spain declared a national emergency around Madrid, evacuating tens of thousands; France evacuated tens of thousands in the south and nearly 10,000 people near Madrid. Scotland’s Cairngorms were declared a “major incident,” prompting local evacuations, and Hungary reported a 33 % rise in forest fires in the first half of 2026.

WHO Europe director Hans Henri Kluge warned that smoke plumes carrying fine particulates, nitrogen‑dioxide, ozone, VOCs and heavy metals travel hundreds of kilometres, aggravating cardiovascular, respiratory and mental‑health conditions among the elderly, children, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses. He urged swift fire, weather and air‑quality alerts, clear health guidance and the maintenance of primary and emergency health services, while noting human negligence—discarded cigarettes, uncontrolled campfires and sparks from agricultural equipment—remains a major cause alongside climate‑driven hotter, drier conditions.
