Diesel prices in Slovakia have risen by approximately 30 cents per liter over the course of one month, pushing average costs above 1.80 euros per liter, with premium varieties exceeding 2.00 euros. This surge has narrowed the price gap between Slovakia and neighboring countries like the Czech Republic and Hungary. This increase is part of a broader trend affecting 21 of the 27 European Union member states, driven by global market tensions including Middle East supply complications, restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, and Russian export restrictions following refinery damage. While no immediate physical fuel shortage exists, high volatility continues to impact the logistics, construction, and agricultural sectors. Recent shifts in global Brent crude prices, which fell below $80 per barrel due to more favorable news from the Middle East, have led to some price adjustments in neighboring regions. As of late August 2026, several Balkan and Central European nations have announced regulated price adjustments to stabilize markets. In Slovenia, Croatia, diesel and heating oil prices were projected are set to decrease, though decrease by 0.07 EUR per liter, and blue diesel by 0.11 EUR per liter, while gasoline prices were expected to see a slight increase. Similarly, in Croatia, new regulations effective September 2, 2025, involve a decrease in will rise by 0.01 EUR per liter. In North Macedonia, diesel prices will decrease by 6.5 denars per liter, while gasoline rises by 1 denar. Additionally, Austria has extended fuel price mitigation measures, including a tax policies. reduction of 1.9 cents per liter, through September 30, 2026, to buffer against international wholesale market fluctuations.
