European financial institutions are increasing investments in Egypt to support renewable energy, water security, and sustainable finance. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is investing up to $221 million to add solar, wind, and battery storage capacity to the national grid, while the European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided over €1.2 billion for water-related projects since 1989, focusing on wastewater treatment and sanitation. Building on these efforts, EIB Vice President Gisela Pistamante visited Egypt to strengthen partnerships regarding green investments and private sector growth. Discussions with the Central Bank of Egypt focused on activating the Greening Financial Systems Program (GFS) and enhancing climate risk management. These initiatives aim to support renewable energy, circular economy projects, and expanded financial services for rural areas, women, and youth. Recent developments show a surge in strategic investments across energy, water, and SME sectors. The EIB has committed $37.5 million to the Tanmeyah Capital 2 fund, which recently closed at $130 million to support high-growth companies in healthcare, fintech, logistics, and technology. In the energy sector, Norwegian company Scatec ASA plans to invest approximately $5 billion over the next two years in renewable energy, storage, water desalination, and data centers, with a focus on projects like Energy Valley and wind and solar plants in Shadwan and Dandara. Regarding water security, Egypt is strengthening bilateral ties with the United Kingdom through the Egypt-UK Green Growth Agreement, focusing on wastewater treatment, desalination, and modern irrigation. Additionally, Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, has called for expanded European financing to help modernize water infrastructure to ensure food security and climate resilience.
