During the summer of 2026, several European nations experienced notable lightning activity. Italy recorded the highest number of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in Europe, totaling 298,341 between June 1 and August 31, with a density of 4.73 contact points per square kilometer. France followed as the second most affected country, recording over 243,000 impacts. In Germany, lightning discharges reached 1,056,200, which is approximately 15 percent below the ten-year average according to the Munich-based company Nowcast. Experts attribute the lower-than-average activity to a dry summer. The strongest single lightning strike was measured in Schiffdorf, Lower Saxony. Beyond lightning data, the summer heatwave has had significant economic consequences. Allianz’s Climate Risk Tracker estimates that the heatwave reduced European economic output by approximately 113 billion euros, representing nearly 0.5 percent of Europe’s projected annual output. Italy faced the largest impact with an estimated 28 billion euro loss, followed by Germany at 25 billion euros and France at 20 billion euros. These losses are attributed to production outages, increased absenteeism, and decreased labor productivity. A study by Allianz and Allianz Trade further specifies that Germany’s 25 billion euro loss was driven by reduced productivity, increased absenteeism, and longer rest periods due to limited air conditioning.
