Research conducted via the GLORIA monitoring network indicates significant shifts in European mountain vegetation due to warming temperatures. An initial study published in Nature Ecology and Evolution observed a process of thermophilisation across 53 summits, where vegetation is shifting toward warmth-loving species. Lead author Johannes Hausharter noted that while these changes are evident, the rate of shift does not depend solely on rising temperatures, suggesting local conditions play a significant role.
Subsequent findings published in Science highlight a more critical consequence of these climatic shifts. While warming has allowed some species to expand into higher altitudes, increasing overall biodiversity in some areas, it has simultaneously accelerated the extinction rates of specialized high-altitude flora. Data from 62 summits between 2001 and 2022, including sites in the Alps, Pyrenees, and the Caucasus, show that the percentage of species no longer detected on mountain peaks is rising.
As lower-altitude plants move upward, they create increased competition and density, causing specialized species to lose their competitive advantage. In the Alps, species such as Glacier Buttercup, Single-flowered Stonecrop, and Alpine Avens are among those facing disappearance. This trend is particularly evident in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada in Spain, and the Lefka Ori mountains in Crete, Greece. Scientists observe that because these high-altitude species are often long-lived and stress-tolerant, extinction may occur with a significant delay following initial climatic shifts. The research indicates that for every 0.1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the proportion of local extinctions increases by 1.1% on summits and 1% at a regional level. Newer research suggests a dual threat to these ecosystems, as insect pollinators may face physiological challenges at higher altitudes, risking a collapse of natural cycles.
