European night train travel is experiencing a period of growth and expanded service. Data from the digital travel platform Omio indicates a steady year-on-year increase of 8% in night train bookings, with specific services such as Nightjet and EuroNight seeing increases of 15% and 26%, respectively. Major hubs for these journeys include Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague, Paris, and Sint-Gillis, though travelers are also utilizing routes such as the Sofia-Istanbul Express. Sint-Gillis. Building on this momentum, European Sleeper and German railway operator RDC have announced a strategic partnership to launch a Scandinavian night train route in April 2028. This service, intended to run three times per week, service will provide a direct overnight connection between the Benelux region (Brussels and Amsterdam) and Scandinavia (Copenhagen and Malmö), Scandinavia, with intermediate stops in Antwerp, Rotterdam, and The Hague. While the project aims to link the Benelux region with Denmark and southern Sweden, it faces industry-wide challenges, including such as a shortage of modern rolling stock, complex cross-border regulatory procedures, stock and capacity constraints on heavily used rail corridors in Germany, Denmark, and constraints, the Netherlands. A formal track access application operator is expected in April 2027. Further network developments include actively expanding its network. In September 2026, European Sleeper launched a Brussels-Milan new night train service launching connecting Cologne, Germany, to Milan, Italy. The route includes stops in September 2026 Aachen and Aarau, Switzerland, as part of a planned Brussels-Barcelona broader connection between Brussels and Milan. Currently, trains depart from Brussels toward Italy on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Following a scheduled adjustment in 2028. mid-December, the route will change to include stops in Antwerp, Breda, and Eindhoven instead of Aachen. This marks the third European route operated by European Sleeper, joining their existing services between Paris and Berlin, and Brussels and Prague.
