Efforts to establish European digital sovereignty through open-source productivity software have progressed through new software releases and corporate collaborations. In September 2026, Euro-Office, a European open-source office suite developed by a consortium including IONOS and Nextcloud, announced the launch of a standalone desktop application for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Part of the Nextcloud Hub 26 update, the application is intended to provide a sovereign alternative to Microsoft 365 by allowing local file editing with server synchronization. Nextcloud CEO Frank Karlitschek stated the app provides a “real alternative” for organizations seeking data control without relying on non-European providers. However, the project has faced scrutiny because it is a fork of ONLYOFFICE, which has been linked to Latvian registration and previous licensing disputes. By October 2026, the movement toward sovereign digital workspaces expanded as the openDesk digital workspace, developed by Germany’s Center for Digital Sovereignty (ZenDiS), experienced a surge in demand. Having already sold over 200,000 licenses, the platform’s strategic importance was previously highlighted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which adopted the suite in 2025 to mitigate risks regarding US sanctions. To manage this growth and target international markets, six open-source manufacturers formed manufacturers—Collabora Productivity, Element, Nordeck, Open-Xchange, Univention, and XWiki—formed a joint venture called Open Productivity Software GmbH. This entity was created to market and promote openDesk, a digital workspace comprising tools from Collabora Productivity, Element, Nordeck, Open-Xchange, Univention, and XWiki. The initiative aims to offer a sovereign alternative market openDesk to proprietary suites for businesses and critical infrastructure operators, supported by partners providing such as Adfinis, the msg-group, and Smile, who provide consulting and system integration.
