By mid-August 2026, the scale of the issue in the Netherlands became more apparent. The Fraudehelpdesk reported 175 cases of rental fraud via advertisements in the first half of 2026, a sharp increase from 21 reports during the same period the previous year. These TikTok-driven scams specifically target students with attractive-looking room listings that require upfront reservation or viewing fees. Experts from Huurteams Nijmegen and Wageningen have reiterated that charging for viewings is illegal, even if a refund is promised, and warned that offers appearing ‘too good to be true’ are high-risk.
