European river droughts and archaeological discoveries

Extreme drought and heat waves across Europe have caused record-low water levels in major rivers, including the Danube and the Rhine. These conditions have disrupted inland waterway freight transport, particularly affecting supply chains in Germany and the Netherlands. The receding waters have also impacted energy infrastructure, threatening cooling processes at nuclear power plants in Hungary and Romania.

In Bulgaria, the drought has facilitated significant archaeological and paleontological discoveries along the Danube. Following the discovery of woolly mammoth remains near Ryahovo, a volunteer expedition organized by the Ruse Regional History Museum explored the dry riverbed. This search uncovered a subfossil horse jawbone, remains likely belonging to an aurochs or European bison, and fossilized oysters dating back 60 to 65 million years to the Lower Cretaceous period.

Krasimir Kirov, a curator at the Ruse Regional History Museum, attributed the low water levels to a combination of climate change and human modifications to the river basin. While the drought presents industrial and shipping challenges, it continues to expose historical relics, including World War II-era shipwrecks and Roman-era foundations. Experts remain concerned that exposure to the elements poses a risk of “irreversible damage” to these artifacts.
