European river water quality trends

Overview

A study led by the Universitat Politècnica de València (IIAMA-UPV) indicates that while the ecological status of European rivers is improving, the current pace is insufficient to meet 2030 environmental restoration targets.

Data analyzed between 2015 and 2021 shows that organic pollution decreased in 14 of 18 studied countries and phosphate concentrations fell in 11 of 16 states with sufficient data. However, Slovenia is the only country identified as being on a trajectory fully compatible with 2030 goals. Other nations with positive assessments, such as Finland, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, and Denmark, are advised to strengthen management policies to ensure sustainability.

Spain and Bulgaria face the most critical situations, characterized by high pollution levels and unfavorable trends. Other countries facing significant challenges include Belgium, Lithuania, Romania, and Sweden. Lead author María Pachés emphasized that monitoring the speed of improvement is as vital as knowing the current state to guarantee biodiversity and functionality by the end of the decade.
