In early August 2026 European nations marked 2 August as the European Day of Remembrance for the Rom and Sinti Holocaust. Building on July commemorations in Germany and Italy and the Council of Europe’s declaration, the day honoured roughly 4,300 victims murdered in the Auschwitz‑Birkenau gas chambers and the broader Porajmos, whose total death toll is estimated between 250,000 and half a million. Sweden’s Forum for Living History opened the “Pride and Community – Young Roma Speak” exhibition in Stockholm and introduced school programmes. Austria’s Green Party spokesperson Olga Voglauer called for decisive action against antiziganism, while German scholars reflected on a “second persecution.” New ceremonies were held at Croatia’s Uštica memorial site, attended by Labour Minister Alen Ružić, and Bosnia‑Herzegovina broadcast radio programmes on the remembrance. Official estimates cited at least 16,173 Roma killed at the Jasenovac camp, including 5,608 children, alongside the Auschwitz figures. Across the continent, the events underscored persistent discrimination in housing, education, employment and public life, urging European institutions to translate symbolic remembrance into concrete policies on education, legal equality and anti‑racist measures. In Germany, guided remembrance tours visited the former Ravensbrück women’s camp and Sachsenhausen concentration camp, organised by Brandenburgische Gedenkstätten and linked to the “Wir intervenieren!” exhibition. Participants such as Madeleine Kehrer, whose grandmother Anna Schneck was murdered at Auschwitz, and activist Armani Spindler used the tours to educate schools and police about antiziganism and to keep the memory alive for younger generations.
