European Union electoral and integration developments

Overview

The European political landscape is entering a critical period defined by various national and regional elections. In Germany, the rise of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party continues to challenge government stability and European integration.

In the Saxony-Anhalt regional elections, the AfD achieved a major victory, securing approximately 43.8% of the vote and 39 of the 83 available parliamentary seats. This result more than doubles the party's previous performance, leaving it just three seats short of an absolute majority. This success was driven by voter dissatisfaction regarding rising consumer prices, job insecurity, and a perceived abandonment by the political establishment. The AfD’s ‘Vision 2026’ program includes radical proposals such as large-scale deportation operations.

This success came at the expense of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Led by Friedrich Merz, the CDU suffered a severe defeat, receiving only 17.2% of the vote. Merz described the outcome as one of the party’s worst electoral losses in decades, stating the result has ‘shaken the party to its foundations.’ While facing intense pressure and calls for leadership changes, Merz has declared that resignation is not an option and emphasized that Germany's democratic institutions remain strong. He further noted that the party cannot return to ‘business as usual.’

Public discontent is reflected in an Infratest dimap survey, which indicates that 87% of voters in Saxony-Anhalt are dissatisfied with the government. International and domestic reactions have been wary. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani characterized the result as ‘bad news,’ describing the AfD as a force ‘antithetical to liberal and Western values.’
