European Union enlargement process reform proposals
Overview
The European Commission has proposed reforms to the EU enlargement process to address a changing global landscape. Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos announced that the Commission is targeting four key areas to prepare for future membership waves.
Proposed changes include reducing the ability of individual member states to block decisions to prevent bilateral blockades and facilitate faster decision-making for a larger Union. The reform also seeks to implement stricter mechanisms to protect democracy and the rule of law. Additionally, the Commission is considering a model of gradual integration, which would allow candidate countries to participate in specific EU policies, programs, or parts of the single market prior to achieving full membership.
