The European Commission has expanded its financial support for industrial decarbonization and renewable energy infrastructure. Building on previous initiatives, the Commission has now allocated €3.4 billion through the Innovation Fund to support 77 industrial projects across 23 countries in the European Economic Area. These projects, funded by revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), target sectors such as clean mobility, critical raw materials, and advanced nuclear technology. Notably, the selection includes the first small modular reactor (SMR) project, titled NetZ, as well as a direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) initiative. In Spain, specific initiatives include October 2026, the Commission announced a Tarragona-based project by Greenertis Tarragona new €1 billion auction scheduled for December to convert plastic waste into raw materials, and support the ECO2FLY project, which aims to supply approximately 50% decarbonization of Spain’s sustainable aviation fuel demand by 2032. In the Czech Republic, the ComPon project intends to install a floating energy platform in Prague to provide district heating industrial process heat. This Innovation Fund 2026 (IF26) Heat Auction will target electrified solutions like heat pumps and cooling. In France, the selection includes a thermal storage, direct renewable heat from solar manufacturing facility by Holosolis. In Croatia, Končar’s NEXUS project was chosen to industrialize a 2.5 MW modular power platform, while Italy’s Ravenna CCS Phase 2 project was selected or geothermal systems, and, for large-scale CO2 transport and storage. Collectively, the 77 projects are estimated to prevent roughly 290 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions during their first decade of operation. Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Growth, Wopke Hoekstra, stated that reinvesting ETS revenues into cutting-edge clean time, nuclear technologies helps businesses reduce emissions while “strengthening European competitiveness and resilience.” Regarding infrastructure, such as small modular reactors. This is part of the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has granted official cross-border status Clean Industrial Deal to three renewable boost domestic clean energy projects: WIND (Ukraine and Romania), DEPLOY (Poland and Germany), and ZEGA-LINNK (Austria investment. Further Innovation Fund support has been directed toward improving industrial heat pump performance and Germany). Totaling 850 MW, these thermal energy recovery. Key projects are now eligible include Hungary’s PUMPEDGE, which aims to improve energy efficiency by approximately 30% using new thermally conductive materials, and Sweden’s OrbitalHPM-2026, which focuses on industrializing a heat pump module for funding under sanitary hot water production. Additionally, the Connecting Europe Facility. transition toward low-impact refrigerants like R290 propane is gaining momentum in commercial and industrial HVAC systems as manufacturers adopt “Safety by Design” principles to manage flammability risks.
