Croatia continues remediation of illegal waste sites

Remediation efforts at the former PPK Velebit site in Gospić have progressed to the removal of approximately 650 tons of non-hazardous waste stored in large bags. This material is being transported to Holcim and Nexe cement plants to serve as alternative fuel for clinker production. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition has defended this process, asserting that the waste has been verified by multiple laboratories and adheres to strict environmental permits, while dismissing allegations of improper reclassification. Technical stabilization continues with Kostak excavating anchor channels. The company plans to install a protective geomembrane, pending favorable weather, to prevent rainwater from infiltrating the buried waste. In response to ongoing concerns from the civic initiative ‘Gospić je naš dom’ regarding dust, odors, and transparency, new environmental safeguards have been implemented. At the request of the City of Gospić, experts from the Split-Dalmatia County Institute of Public Health have installed an air quality monitoring station at the site. This station ~~will measure~~ measures PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter and ~~analyze~~ analyzes samples for heavy ~~metals.~~ metals, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and nickel. Initial measurement results for October 10 and 11 indicate that air quality remains within satisfactory parameters. Heavy metal concentrations were also found to be within prescribed limits. While the equipment was initially deployed for one month, officials stated that monitoring will continue for at least one year, or throughout the entire remediation process, to assess impacts on human health. Data is expected to be released to the public on a near-daily basis. This follows requests for increased transparency from the Istria County Assembly and discussions in the national parliament regarding intelligence reports from the SOA. In Poznanovac, the 11.7 million euro project to remediate 13,200 tons of waste remains underway via a consortium including SAUBERMACHER-TS and EKO-FLOR PLUS.
