Water scarcity and management issues persist across Europe, characterized by extreme weather volatility. In August 2026, Italy and Switzerland reached an emergency agreement to address critical shortages in Lago Maggiore. To support the Po River basin, water discharge from Lake Lugano at Ponte Tresa was increased, though Swiss authorities in Ticino reported hydroelectric reservoir levels at a decade low. By late August, heavy rainfall in Lombardy provided some relief to water reserves but triggered significant hydrogeological instability, including landslides, bridge collapses, and road closures in Brescia, Genoa, and Como. Simultaneously, an Atlantic weather disturbance triggered widespread severe weather warnings across Italy, with flooding reported in Liguria and orange alerts in Tuscany and Parma. By September 10, the impact of the Atlantic low-pressure system intensified. Severe storms and torrential rain caused widespread flooding across northern and central Italy, resulting in at least two fatalities. In Latisana, an 83-year-old woman drowned after her car was trapped in a flooded underpass, while in Tuscany, a woman was killed by a tornado. In the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, rainfall reached up to 203 mm in Lignano Sabbiadoro within 24 hours. By September 17, severe storms in Como continued to trigger landslides and mudslides. On October 7, a new Atlantic weather disturbance brought widespread severe weather. In Rome and its province, emergency services responded to approximately 120 interventions overnight, managing fallen trees and damaged infrastructure. In Campania, the Protezione Civile issued an orange alert for Naples, the Vesuvian area, the Campanian Plain, and the islands of Ischia, Procida, and Capri, warning of risks such as landslides and hydraulic instability. In Anzio, an orange alert prompted the closure of schools, cemeteries, and public spaces. Several municipalities in Campania, including Marigliano, Torre del Greco, and Pozzuoli, also ordered school closures for October 9 due to hydrological risks.
