European regions are preparing for the 2026-2027 winter sports season, characterized by infrastructure upgrades and major international competitions. In the Southern Alps, the Le Briançonnais region is preparing for freestyle skiing, snowboarding, and freeride events tied to the upcoming 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This development is expected to drive significant economic impact and infrastructure modernization, such as improvements to the Alpine train line. The Portes du Soleil domain, spanning France and Switzerland, will offer 600 km of slopes across its interconnected stations. In Austria, glacier ski areas including Sölden, Stubai, Hintertux, and Pitztal are beginning operations. Infrastructure developments include new chairlifts in Ischgl and Schmittenhöhe, new freeride routes in Nauders, and the introduction of electric exoskeletons for hikers in Carinthia. Recent additions to the Paznaun Valley include the ‘Familienglück’ chairlift and a 152-meter Sunkid conveyor belt at the See ski resort to assist beginners. In the Tyrol region, extensive modernization is underway to replace aging systems with high-capacity technology. At the Hintertux Glacier, a new ten-person gondola will replace a forty-year-old four-person system in late October. In St. Johann in Tirol, the Jodlalmlift is scheduled to begin operations on December 6, while the Venetbahn in Zams will launch on December 19 with 44-person cabins designed for improved accessibility. In Ischgl, the new eight-person Hoellkarbahn C2 will feature heated seats and weather protection. However, the season faces rising costs for tourists. In the Tyrol region, daily skipass prices are increasing at a rate significantly higher than inflation, with some top-tier resorts like Sölden seeing daily passes reach as high as 86.50 euros during peak periods. Experts suggest that while competition drives investment, the ‘luxurification’ of skiing is making the sport increasingly expensive. The season will host a dense calendar of events, including the 30th Nightrace in Schladming, the 75th Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck, the Winter Deaflympics in Innsbruck and Seefeld, the FIS Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup in Gosau, and the FIS Snowboard, Freestyle, and Freeski World Championships in Montafon and Kühtai.
