European workers' vacation recovery challenges
Entities: Finnish workers · SD Worx · Mikko Uotila · Finland
Overview
A study of Spanish employees concluded that almost a month of paid leave is required for workers to fully recover after a holiday. The research highlighted persistent fatigue when vacation time is shorter, suggesting current leave entitlements are insufficient for proper rest.
A later survey of Finnish workers in May 2026 reinforced these findings. One‑third of respondents reported incomplete recovery from their annual leave, with 32 % feeling insufficiently rested. The problem was most pronounced among 25‑ to 44‑year‑olds, where 42 % remained fatigued, and among women, who reported higher rates of partial recovery. Young adults also struggled to disconnect from work. Finnish participants expressed a desire for longer vacations, averaging 36.7 paid days versus the existing 26.6, and cited inadequate supervisory support for taking leave. Together, the Spanish and Finnish evidence points to a broader European issue of short vacation periods contributing to inadequate worker recovery, with potential impacts on health, error rates, and staff turnover.
