European youth educational and safety initiatives

Overview

Educational and social initiatives are being implemented across Europe to address the evolving challenges faced by youth in digital and social environments.

In Italy, programs such as those led by Deascuola and ASviS are integrating artificial intelligence, sustainability, and global citizenship into school curricula. These efforts include webinars focused on the mental and environmental impacts of AI, as well as sessions designed to help parents and educators support adolescents navigating social uncertainty.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, the focus has expanded to include conflict resolution and digital safety. The Forum for Freedom of Education has advocated for the systematic introduction of school mediation and non-violent communication, following a program that trained hundreds of educators and students. Additionally, community events have been used to warn students about internet-related dangers, such as cyberbullying and grooming, while emphasizing the importance of trust between children and parents.

Recent developments show rising concerns regarding child safety and mental health. In Montenegro, students have met with parliamentarians to demand stronger digital protections for minors, safer student employment, and improved psychological counseling. In Croatia, health experts plan to establish 120 psychological counseling centers over the next three years to address pressures from social media and academic expectations.

Security risks are also intensifying; Interpol has warned that artificial intelligence is being used to exploit children’s photos for sexual extortion. To mitigate digital risks, the European Data Protection Board issued guidelines for smart glasses to ensure users are aware of recording. Meanwhile, in Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, programs continue to emphasize school mediation and recognizing behavioral changes that may indicate online exploitation or psychological distress.
