Following Dara’s 2026 victory, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have officially selected Burgas to host the 71st Eurovision Song Contest in May 2027. The main events will be held at Arena Burgas, with semi-finals on May 11 and 13, and the grand final on May 15, 2027. While Burgas is the primary host, BNT plans to include Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna in supporting cultural programs. The selection process saw a period of uncertainty when the decision was delayed beyond the initial July deadline. During this time, the competition between Sofia and Burgas was reported as a “50:50 split.” BNT addressed rumors of political tension regarding the choice, stating that “neither the director general nor other people involved in the Eurovision project have ever expressed a preference for Sofia or Burgas,” emphasizing that the decision rested on technical and logistical evaluations. As preparations progress, the Bulgarian Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) has announced it will monitor accommodation prices in Burgas to prevent unfair practices. This follows reports of extreme rental costs, including one apartment listed for approximately 118,000 euros per week. CCP Chairman Alexander Kolyachev described such pricing as “comical” and noted that the regulator will investigate potential violations of consumer protection laws and engage with the Ministry of Tourism to ensure fair service conditions during the event. The total hosting cost is estimated at approximately €50 million, funded by the state, municipalities, and private sponsors. Several countries, including Slovakia, Monaco, Andorra, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, have already confirmed they will not participate in the 2027 contest. Political tensions have emerged regarding the hosting decision. Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov has denied rumors of a presidential bid, stating he will focus entirely on the contest’s logistics and infrastructure.
