The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has finalized regulatory updates for the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, including a clause that prevents broadcasters in states facing armed conflict or significant security instability from hosting. Other changes include raising the performer minimum age to 18, mandating live lead vocals, and proposing a three-favorite online voting system to curb block voting. Following Dara’s 2026 victory, Burgas, Bulgaria, has been officially selected to host the 71st contest from May 11–15, 2027, with the grand final at Arena Burgas. While BNT and the Ministry of Tourism plan to host supporting cultural activities in Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna to ensure national impact, the selection has drawn political scrutiny. Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev has called for greater transparency regarding why Burgas was chosen over the capital. Economic and diplomatic tensions are also emerging. The Commission for Consumer Protection has launched inspections in the Burgas region to investigate reports of extreme price gouging, including a single apartment rental offer of approximately 118,000 euros for one week. Additionally, the Netherlands has announced a boycott of the 2027 event. Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS stated the contest can no longer be considered neutral due to international divisions surrounding the war in Gaza, with Director General Taco Zimmerman noting that such conflicts are turning the competition into a ‘platform for division.’ AVROTROS further noted that recent EBU rule changes regarding hosting rights do not provide sufficient confidence that the event’s independent and neutral character has been restored. It remains undecided whether another Dutch broadcaster under the NPO umbrella will participate in 2027. This follows a period of declining viewership, with the 2026 contest drawing 131 million viewers amid boycotts from Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and Iceland in protest of Israel's inclusion.
