The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has finalized regulatory updates for the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, including a clause preventing broadcasters in states facing armed conflict or significant security instability from hosting. Other changes include raising the performer minimum age to 18, mandating live lead vocals, and proposing a three-favorite online voting system to curb block voting. Additionally, songs must be original and cannot have been previously released or publicly performed before the official release date. Following Dara’s 2026 victory, Burgas, Bulgaria, has been selected to host the 71st contest from May 11–15, 2027. BNT Director General Milena Milotinova emphasized that hosting in Burgas will serve as a platform to showcase Bulgaria’s talent, history, and business sectors to a global audience. To manage the expected 400,000 visitors, Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikollov has suspended municipal staff vacations. Participation status remains fluid. While Ukraine, Albania, and North Macedonia have confirmed their intent to compete, the Netherlands’ NPO has confirmed its return—noting that EBU measures aim to reinforce the festival’s ‘unifying character’—and will take over responsibility from Avrotros, which had previously announced a boycott. NPO plans to use an independent panel of experts to select the artist and will coordinate the project as a collective effort among public broadcasters, with NOS handling broadcast coverage. Belgium’s VRT has also confirmed participation, stating its involvement is a commitment to the contest’s ‘original values’ rather than an endorsement of geopolitical conflicts, despite criticism from local unions and politicians. ~~Conversely, Ireland and Spain have indicated they intend~~ VRT officials noted the decision is an effort to ~~maintain their boycotts in protest~~ work within the EBU to restore values of ‘solidarity, mutual understanding and the ~~ongoing situation~~ aspiration for peace.’ Due to time constraints, VRT will select a candidate internally.
