Economic indicators in the Eurozone have shown signs of contraction and declining sentiment through the fourth quarter of 2026. Industrial production faced a sustained downturn through August, with an annual decline of 1.1%. While sector performance was mixed, non-durable consumer goods saw sharp declines. Sentiment indicators have weakened significantly. In September, the Eurozone economic sentiment indicator fell to 97.9, missing the anticipated 99.0, driven by household pessimism regarding inflation and personal finances. In Italy, both consumer and business confidence fell in September, ending a three-month growth period. By October, consumer confidence dropped by 1.1 points to -17.9, a decline more significant than the -17.0 points anticipated by economists. Analysts attribute this downturn to rising fuel prices. Economic activity also showed signs of slowing in October. The composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to 51.9 from 53.1 in September, marking a quarterly low and missing economist forecasts of 52.7. Although the index remains above the 50-point threshold, the pace of growth has weakened across both services and manufacturing. France emerged as a primary source of weakness, with business activity falling to a composite PMI of 48.4 in October, signaling a renewed contraction in both services and manufacturing due to political uncertainty, fiscal instability, and social unrest. In Germany, growth softened as a slowdown in the services sector offset manufacturing gains, bringing the German composite PMI to 52.8. Broader eurozone growth remains pressured by rising input costs from energy, fuel, and transport prices, alongside the impact of higher interest rates. In financial markets, concerns regarding France’s budget and debt risk premiums have placed downward pressure on the euro. The French 10-year bond premium widened significantly, reflecting investor anxiety over the country’s fiscal position.
