Evolution of AI hardware and semiconductor architecture

The landscape of artificial intelligence hardware is undergoing a shift toward specialized architectures and decentralized processing. Initially, the focus has expanded beyond the dominance of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to include Central Processing Units (CPUs) and Neural Processing Units (NPUs). This evolution is driven by the rise of autonomous AI agents that require CPUs for complex logic, such as code execution and service orchestration. Additionally, consumer-grade hardware is increasingly incorporating NPUs to facilitate local, offline AI tasks.

Concurrently, major technology firms including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are developing proprietary AI processors to decrease their reliance on Nvidia. While Nvidia maintains a competitive edge through its CUDA software ecosystem, the industry is moving toward specialized accelerators. This transition is also being seen in the shift toward edge computing, where processing for real-time inference is moving from centralized data centers to the edge to reduce latency for applications like autonomous vehicles and robotics.
