Synology has released ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 (APM 2.0), an update to its data protection platform aimed at managing fragmented hybrid IT environments. The software expands compatibility to include platforms such as Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, and Google Workspace. A key feature of the update is cross-platform recovery, which allows organizations to back up workloads in one environment and restore them in another to facilitate disaster recovery and workload migration. Specifically, backups stored in Amazon S3 or Azure Blob Storage can be restored directly into Amazon EC2 or Azure VM environments without requiring on-premises hardware as an intermediary. The update also adds Azure Blob Storage as a supported destination for backup and tiering, expands compatible Synology NAS models for ActiveProtect Vault, and introduces software-based volume-level storage encryption for data at rest. Looking ahead, Synology announced that the upcoming APM 2.1 version will introduce AI/ML-driven anomaly detection and malware scanning through integrations with third-party antivirus software, including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and ESET. In the broader context of enterprise cybersecurity, these developments in hybrid backup management are being viewed alongside emerging hardware-level defenses. As software-based defenses face rising costs due to AI-driven attacks, new attacks—with average incident costs reaching 6 million dollars—new technologies like Dover Microsystems’ CoreGuard are also targeting vulnerabilities at the processor level level. This silicon-level defense uses a parallel layer to block unauthorized actions analyze instructions in real time. time, blocking unauthorized actions before they impact the system.
