While historical and contemporary guides focus on the techniques and species involved in freshwater and coastal fishing, there is a growing movement toward fishing tourism. To combat rising operational costs and support rural communities, professional fishermen are increasingly integrating maritime expertise with tourism and gastronomy. The Ministry of Rural Development and Food is supporting this transition through the 'Fisheries, Aquaculture and Sea 2021-2027' program, providing funding for vessel modernization and infrastructure upgrades under a sustainable blue economy framework. Recent promotional efforts emphasize fishing tourism as a vital source of supplementary income, particularly in island and coastal regions. According to Spyros Protopsaltis, General Secretary of Rural Development and Food, the initiative aims to help fishers bolster their earnings, retain younger generations within the profession, and preserve local traditions. Under the program's Specific Objective 3.1, grants are being utilized to modernize vessels for passenger accommodation, purchase specialized equipment, and improve safety, hygiene, and infrastructure to support experiential and diving tourism.
