Exercise guidance for osteoarthritis

Overview

In late July 2026, health experts highlighted aerobic, low‑impact activities such as stationary cycling, brisk walking, water aerobics and elliptical training as the most effective exercise for managing knee osteoarthritis. These exercises were noted to improve joint function, lessen inflammation and pain, and help maintain a healthy weight. Surgeons also warned that worsening nighttime knee pain could indicate serious conditions like bone tumours and urged prompt medical evaluation.

The following day, a systematic review of 18 clinical trials involving 1,368 people with hip osteoarthritis found that exercise produced only modest pain relief—about a 7‑point reduction on a 100‑point scale—insufficient for many patients to notice a meaningful improvement in daily life. Nonetheless, experts reiterated that regular physical activity supports healthy aging, offering benefits such as improved cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, bone density and reduced fall risk for older adults.
