Exodus RPG development and announcement
Overview
Archetype Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast have announced Exodus, a science fiction action RPG developed using Unreal Engine 5. The game features a narrative set in a future where humanity has fled a dying Earth, utilizing a time dilation mechanic where interstellar travel causes decades or centuries to pass on home planets.
Following the initial announcement, a hands-on demo was showcased at Gamescom 2026. The project, described as a spiritual successor to the Mass Effect series, is being developed by a team including former BioWare veterans such as Drew Karpyshyn, James Ohlen, and Chad Robertson. Gameplay previews highlighted missions on the Khonsu defense platform, emphasizing third-person action, squad-based combat, and character-driven storytelling. Combat mechanics involve fast-paced shooting, gadgets, and abilities.
The story follows protagonist Jun Aslan, who can be customized as either male or female, on a quest to save the planet Lidon from a techno-virus. Narrative director Drew Karpyshyn confirmed that romance options are not gender-locked, allowing for complex relationship dynamics based on player choices. While developers noted that certain non-human characters, such as the Awakened octopus Salt, are excluded from romantic interactions, the game emphasizes role-playing through dialogue and decisions that affect companion affinity and story outcomes. These relationships can be complicated, potentially leading to conflicts between crew members.
During Gamescom, Karpyshyn further detailed the time dilation mechanic, explaining that traveling near the speed of light for ‘Exodus missions’ means years can elapse on a home world while only days pass for the player. This can result in NPCs aging or disappearing entirely. Players must gather resources and allies to ensure they do not return to a ruined home system. Exodus is scheduled for release on April 7, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
