Expansion of confidential AI security technologies

Overview

Technology companies are expanding confidential AI capabilities to protect sensitive data and model weights during processing.

VAST Data, in collaboration with NVIDIA, announced DataEnclave, a system designed to enable the execution of third-party AI models within secure, hardware-isolated environments. The technology aims to resolve privacy conflicts in regulated sectors by using cryptographic attestation to ensure that data and model keys remain under the control of their respective owners. Performance tests on NVIDIA Blackwell systems suggest minimal overhead during encrypted execution.

Following this, Fortanix extended its Confidential AI platform to support Kubernetes workloads through the Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s Confidential Containers project. This development addresses security vulnerabilities during AI inference, where data is typically decrypted in processor memory. Fortanix is developing open-source plugins to verify container authenticity and utilizes a manager to attest both CPU and GPU components, ensuring keys are only released if specific security policies are met.
